Alien motives and human assumptions

Indifference Is the Danger

Hostility requires that you matter. The worse outcomes historically involve entities that never formed an opinion about you at all.

Plausible Extrapolation
The question is not whether they mean us harm. It is whether they have noticed that there is an us.

What we actually know

Almost nothing that has driven a species to extinction acted out of malice. Habitat is altered, a corridor is paved, a resource is diverted. The harm is complete and the intent is absent. Recognition, not aggression, is the variable that decides those outcomes.

Where the extrapolation begins

A visitor could damage humanity through misclassification — reading a civilisation as weather, infrastructure, or noise. The failure mode is not a war. It is not being counted as a party to one.

What the novel invents

The object has never threatened anyone. It has also never acknowledged anyone. Both facts have been on the record for ninety-three years, and CROWN cannot decide which one is worse.

Questions to think about

  • Name a harm humans have caused without ever intending it.
  • What would it take for a nonhuman intelligence to classify humanity as intelligent?
  • Is being ignored a safe outcome or an unresolved one?
