Plausible ExtrapolationWhat we actually know
Hubble revealed a universe larger and older than many had assumed and pinned down the expansion rate well enough to start an argument about it. Webb looked deeper into cosmic history and found early galaxies that appear more massive and more mature than models predicted, forcing astronomers to reconsider how quickly structure formed. Note the precise claim: Webb challenged our models of early galaxy formation. It did not overturn the evidence for a hot, expanding early universe — NASA has been explicit about that distinction.
Where the extrapolation begins
Roman surveys the sky far more broadly than Hubble at comparable depth, trading a narrow deep view for statistics across enormous volumes. Extending that trajectory, the next step is not a bigger mirror but a wider baseline: many widely separated instruments combined into one synthetic aperture.
What the novel invents
In the novel that instrument is the Ariadne Array, which links separated observatories into a single synthetic eye. The name is deliberate. Ariadne's thread let Theseus navigate the labyrinth; it did not tell him what the labyrinth was for. The Array gives humanity a thread into the cosmic maze without any suggestion it has found the exit.
